The Application Process for Physical Therapy In Jamaica
Within recent years, the career of Physiotherapy has gained more popularity in the region thus, increasing the competitiveness of students to gain entry into the degree at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. We, at All Things Physio (ATP), know that many students struggle to find clear information on what the application process would actually look like, what avenues there are to getting into the field without doing CAPE and additional advice in general.
But don’t worry, we’ve got your back!!
All Things Physio (ATP), has decided to compile a list of everything that you should know about the application process, some tips on how to navigate it effectively and overall advice that can be useful to prospective students. Now, Let’s dive right into it!
Applicants must be at least 18 years old at time of admission.
The basic admission requirements for this degree includes passes in 5 CSEC subjects as well as 2 Science subjects at the CAPE Level (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Biology). These grades should be extremely good because of the increased competitiveness that we mentioned earlier in the article.
UWI, Mona does NOT consider Physical Education a suitable subject to gain entry into the programme as many students have once thought. Hence, forcing those who have done it at the CAPE level to take a year off to meet the academic requirements before entry.
UWI St. Augustine campus offers a one year programme known as N1, that is equivalent to CAPE whereby you can do Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics. This programme has proven to be very helpful to those who decided on the career late or simply chose the wrong subjects in secondary school as I and many others have done before. UWI Cave Hill Campus, Barbados also offers similar prerequisite programmes that are equivalent to Cape Chemistry and Biology. These preliminary courses are another avenue to gaining admission requirements for entry into the Physical Therapy programme. Useful Link: https://www.cavehill.uwi.edu/fst/bcs/programmes/courses.aspx
Persons must complete 60 volunteer hours in a Physical Therapy Department. Applicants must make their own arrangements for this and can split the volunteer process into 30 hours at a private hospital and 30 hours at a public hospital, if they desire. Common places to complete this process include San Fernando General Hospital and Mt. Hope Hospital in Trinidad. For further information on how to begin this process, refer to our Volunteer Process article and YouTube channel using the link at the end of the article.
Applicants are also required to complete an interview prior to acceptance. This is usually communicated via a phone call or email from The Physical Therapy Department at the General Hospital. Do remember to dress appropriately and make the necessary preparations beforehand. See our Interview Process article and YouTube channel for more details on this.
Prospective students must also certify all their documents before it is uploaded on the portal. This can be done by any Senior Administrator at your secondary school which includes the Principal, Vice Principal or Dean. It is also possible for the documents to be certified at any UWI Campus Admission Section near you, this includes UWI Open Campus as well.
Ensure that your recommendations are filled out on the specific Physical Therapy recommendation forms. This can be found and downloaded from the application portal. Recommendations are accepted from Past teachers / Lecturers, Ministers of Religion or Church leaders and a Principal, Vice Principal or Guidance Counselor.
For persons taking the year off to complete a preliminary course at another UWI campus, your transcript must be sent directly to UWI Mona Admission Section. This is usually available for free or at a cost of $30TT at UWI St. Augustine Campus. I suggest the paying option because they tend to lose your transcript when they send it with other things to UWI Mona.
To request this, the steps are:
Go into UWI Administration.
Ask for the Transcript form and fill it out. The forms can also be downloaded from online and completed but they usually have the updated forms available at UWI Admissions Section.
Go to the Cashier and pay the money required.
After you have done this, you take a number to speak to a
representative at Administration.
Give them the completed form and receipt of payment. Inform them again that you wish for it to be sent directly to UWI Mona. Insert the following address on the form:
The Senior Assistant Registrar
Student Affairs (Admissions)
The University of The West Indies
Mona Campus Jamaica, W.I.
An email should be sent to you that the transcript was requested and then another one stating that it was processed. If you do not receive this email, don’t hesitate to email transcripts@sta.uwi.edu or go into the Administration/ Examinations Section at UWI for more information.
These are just a few of the basic requirements you would need to pay close attention to when applying for the Physical Therapy program at UWI Mona Campus, Jamaica as well as some additional tips and advice.
